Okay, I’ve been seriously thrown off my schedule because I’ve been salivating at the prospect of new Grey Knights. But I must FOCUS! It is still the time of the Wolf (until April). Received a couple more of my MIA miniatures. I now have my Fenrisian Wolves, 1 Banner Bearer, and my Sergeants. 2 Banner Bearers and two Thunderwolves are still AWOL as are a few Chapterhouse vehicle enhancement kits (in the mail). Received an email from BattleFoam today telling me that my foam has been shipped, so hopefully, it will be ready for a test fitting by this weekend. Through a frenzy of assembling, I’ve gotten all the Grey Hunters and Long Fangs assembled and I need to finish magnetizing and assembling the Wolf Guard models in order for all my footsloggers to report for painting.
So what is the actual list that I’m putting together. Well I decided to throw together a 2000pt list to fit in the GW hard case. That way I know I could play up to those points and everything below. I’ve actually put together something like 2100 pts, so that I will have a little flexibility as to what exactly I’m going to field. This list is somewhat experimental. It has elements of popular Space Wolves list (you’ll quickly notice the Long Fang spam) but I’ve decided to do the Thunderwolves a little differently. That having been said, I haven’t had a whole lot of success running the list lately. I really don’t have an explanation for this as this list worked well in playtesting. At GenghisCon, I didn’t do very well with this and at the Feast of Blades qualifiers I was knocked out by a friend of mine who knows the ins and out of my list and I can never beat. My third game, my heart wasn’t really into it because of the second game and so I didn’t do myself any favors and forgot to move a Rhino onto an objective and that pretty much cost me the game or any chance for a tie. I’m trying to maintain confidence in the list, but frankly, it is a bit difficult. Anyway, the List itself looks like this:
HQ:
Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf Mount, Saga of the Bear, Thunderhammer, Stormshield, Runic Armor, Wolf Tail Talisman, Wolftooth Necklace, w/ 2 Fenrisian Wolves – 295
Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf Mount, Saga of Majesty, Wolf Claw, Stormshield, Runic Armor, Wolf Tail Talisman, Wolftooth Necklace, w/ 2 Fenrisian Wolves -270
Rune Priest in Power Armor – Chooser of the Slain, Living Lightning, Jaws of the World Wolf
(alternative is Tempest’s Wrath, but lately I haven’t been using it that much, depends on the meta, could really help against Eldar, Dark Eldar, and ‘eggs in one basket’ Stormravens)
ELITE:
3 Wolf Guard in Power Armor, combi-melta, Power-fist – 124
FAST:
1 Thunderwolf Cavalry, Stormshield, Powerfist
1 Thunderwolf Cavalry, Stormshield, Powerfist
TROOPS:
6 Grey Hunters, Mark of the Wulfen, meltagun, Wolf Standard, Rhino, dozer blade – 160
7 Grey Hunters, Mark of the Wulfen, meltagun, Wolf Standard, Rhino, dozer blade – 175
7 Grey Hunters, Mark of the Wulfen, meltagun, Wolf Standard, Rhino, dozer blade -175
HEAVY:
Long Fangs Pack, Sergeant, 5 missile launchers
Long Fangs Pack, Sergeant, 3 Missile launchers, 2 lascannons
Long Fangs Pack, Sergeant, 3 Missile launchers, 2 lascannons
Total: 1999
As I’ve said, I’ve built out a few more Long Fangs and a few extra Grey Hunters, so that I can have some options. to switch things up. Since I had the custom Battlefoam cut to include only 4 thunderwolves, I’m kind of limited by that. But I intend to model the Thunderwolves so that they are all magnetized and can pass as Wolf Lords or just regular Thunderwolf Cavalry if I need them to. I’m also constrained to only 3 Rhinos. Those and the Thunderwolves fitting into the GW case with everyone else makes things a tight fit.
Now obviously, the Adepticon Championships are limited to 1850, so I’ll have to scale things down a bit. I’m busy play-testing variants of the stuff I have to see what I’m more comfortable playing. I think that a lot of folks are going to be ready for the Thunderwolf Deathstar unit this year and so that’s why I’ve chosen to de-emphasize their focus in this list, while still maintaining enough of a lethal presence that they can’t be ignored. Only time will tell. But if I can get everything in time to paint it, one thing is for certain. These guys will look good.
