Review:
Short, Sweet, and Spoiler-Free as always.
Just came out of Battle:Los Angeles. I really liked it. As a lot of people have described the high concept pitch, it’s INDEPENDENCE DAY meets BLACKHAWK DOWN. And that’s pretty much right on the money.
The Positives: Aaron Eckhart’s performance. The visuals. The battle scenes are very intense and keep you on the edge of your seat for sure. Attention to detail portraying members of the armed forces and their interactions.
The negatives: Most of the stuff I didn’t like happened in roughly the first 15 minutes of the movie. There were a little bit too many of “As you may already know….” scenes where one character tells another character something they already know. Also, some of the interactions between the marines were very cliche’. But that’s Hollywood, so what’re you gonna do?Near the film’s ending there were also some distinctly ‘Hollywood’ combat moments which was a little disappointing particularly when the rest of the combat scenes carried consequences for each decision made.
Overall: DISTRICT 9 hit me a lot harder than BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, but both films carry the same vibe. In fact, a lot of the Alien tech in Battle: LA reminded me of the District 9 design aesthetic. Battle:LA is a good movie though, an intense roller-coaster ride in a universe I wouldn’t mind revisiting. Hey, Hollywood, instead of rebooting movies that are barely 10 years old, how about a sequel to this?
